A passion for painting: a passion for the landscape

Peter Wiltshire was born and raised under the vast skies and lush, rolling landscape of Herefordshire.

Here the county hugs the mountainous Welsh border and above average rainfall guarantees its green, agricultural heritage. Scudding and ever changing cloud patterns allow brilliant shafts of luminous sunlight to bathe and sweep across a seasonal, undulating patchwork quilt of deep furrowed red-brown earth, and alternating green and yellow coloured crop-fields.

It was this landscape that shaped and inspired Peter’s passion to become an artist. And painting to him is a passion; as is the love of landscape and the people in it.

One strives not to impose art on the subject, but rather to find it in the subject

To Peter the art is in the landscape. It is rooted in the topography of the land; the way water shapes and interacts with it; the way nature constantly throws up the unexpected and the way it can still inspire awe and respect in its grandeur and sweeping power.

Perhaps it is of little surprise, that the quest to find this art in the landscape has led to painting trips both here at home, and throughout Europe and across America – and as far afield as China and Japan. Peter now lives and paints in the Wiltshire countryside.
